We’ve discussed the benefits of the recently popular photo-sharing application Instagram: using hashtags to connect with customers, carrying out campaigns and contests, connecting photos with social media websites and personalizing your brand. Since Facebook acquired the application in April for a giant $1 billion, companies have been creating accounts to share their product photos and intrigue potential and returning customers. Free People, a trendy and popular women’s retail clothing company, recently expanded the use of Instagram as a marketing tool by incorporating customers’ Instagram uploads onto its product pages.
Free People created hashtags for certain products and encourages customers to upload images of themselves wearing the clothing item via Instagram or Twitter. Once approved by monitors, the photos are placed on the accompanying product’s webpage. The company even goes so far as to inspire this photo-sharing by attaching hashtags to mail-ordered items.
Free People utilizes Olapic, a self-described “social photo crowd-sourcing service providing brands and publishers with tools to engage their audience and support a strong community built on photo and video sharing”. The site assists companies with the easy downloading and embedding of user photographs. The image service plans to work with more e-commerce websites
in the future.
Olapic co-founder José de Cabo explains that its service to Free People is intended to give potential customers a better sense of how clothing will fit their bodies. “Lots of e-commerce customers end up not buying a product because they’re not sure how the product is going to fit after they make the purchase,” he says. “It also shows they have a super hip, engaged customer base,” he added.
