Magento 1 and 2 continues to reign as one of the most popular and powerful ecommerce platforms in the world. According to Usage Statistics by Builtwith,

“There are 237,834 active Magento sites.”

With the recent release of Magento 2, Magento’s new and improved platform has only solidified Magento’s popularity for businesses globally. Completely different platforms, Magento 2 does require a complete rebuild and cannot be offered as an upgrade like traditional releases of later versions of Magento 1.x. With all of the impressive features that come with Magento 2.1 and more and more ecommerce sites on the platform, the question that must be asked is what will happen to Magento 1?

A New Day For Magento 1

For a while now, alarming news has been circulating that Magento 1.x support will no longer be available coming November 18, 2018. With that date rapidly approaching, businesses everywhere were concerned about what they would do. However, there’s light at the end of the tunnel as Magento has just announced that Magento 1.x support has been extended and will be ongoing for the foreseeable future.

Magento has also announced that they will guarantee an 18-month notice before any changes are made to their support level giving ample time for businesses to make their next big ecommerce decision. This means that Magento 1 users will now have open-end support for their ecommerce sites.

Magento also has made it very clear that all they will honor their open-source philosophy for Magento 1 support this does not mean that any additional updates or advanced features will be released for Magento 1. All new releases and updates for Magento will be solely geared towards Magento 2.

The benefits and the reasons for such a strong push towards Magento 2 are because Magento 2 ultimately offers better site performance, a more user-friendly interface and overall better business results for their customers.
