You might have noticed that everyone is doing SEO for their website. Your competitors are doing SEO, your friends are doing SEO, even the kid with the lemonade stand on the corner of your street is doing SEO!

But how do you get started with SEO? The answer to that is keyword research. Here are four tips to help you choose the right keywords for your website.

1) Write around topics, not Keywords

Did you know that 50% of queries on google today are four words or longer?  As a business, it is impossible to track down every single variation of those keywords.

For this reason, it is better to write around topics that match your business, rather than only keywords. When you write around topics, it is much easier to be fluid and conversation with your words. Not only are you going to write useful insights that help your customers want to buy from you, you reduce the risk of awkward keyword-stuffed content.

2) Know your industry

The better you know your industry trends, your customer pain points and what they are searching for, the better you can write accurately for them. The right keywords will become a part of the content more organically this way, and as a bonus, you will become known as an industry expert.

3) Find out if people are searching for it

In real estate, the famous phrase is ‘location, location, location’. In the SEO world, this can be translated to search volume, which shows what people are searching for, and how many searches there are in a given amount of time.

A great tool that we use at Brandastic, is called Keywords Everywhere, which gives you a sense of the search volume data.

Keep in mind that the higher the search volume, the more competitive it is, and high volume search terms may not be valuable for your business to go after.

4) Understand the search intent

Search intent is the reason behind a person searching for a specific topic or keyword. We have discussed this in more detail in a previous article and video about the 4 Types of Search Intents.

In conclusion, making your website a useful tool for your business comes down to getting in front of the right people. Having a well-thought-out SEO campaign and accurate, valuable keywords is the best strategy to improve your search engine rankings.
